Thorne Smith was born in San Francisco and raised in Menlo Park (a suburb to San Francisco). Walter Smith is her father as well as Lora Thorne is her mother. Both of them worked as market researchers for computer systems. Courtney, who was seven years old when she divorced her dad Walter Smith. Courtney lived with Walter Smith, her father at several instances. Jennifer is her elder sister is an ad executive.
